Yakan Tennun Community

The Yakans are an indigenous Muslim tribe from the island of Basilan. Members of the community were taught how to weave by their parents and elders as part of preserving their tradition of tapestry weaving or tenun. The weaves are predominantly bright, bold colors in big symmetrical and geometric patterns. The designs take inspiration from the life and culture of the tribe, and their Islamic sacred geometry. The “tenun” is an important part of the Yakan’s history and identity as it represents the beautiful province of Basilan and it’s people.
